Al Rodgers has spent over 55 years as the quiet engineering powerhouse behind the motion-tracking systems that define the XR industry. Since joining Polhemus in 1969, Rodgers has been the driving force behind the mechanical assembly and refinement of Electromagnetic (EM) tracking—a technology that remains the gold standard for precision sensing in simulation and high-end training today.
His career-long dedication to the military market saw him evaluate and integrate precision tracking into iconic aircraft, including the F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle. Early on, Rodgers provided the critical head-tracking capabilities for Tom Furness’s legendary VCASS, the project that established the technical boundaries of HMD immersion. Later, he led Polhemus to be selected for the Scorpion Helmet Mounted Cueing System (HMCS), a revolutionary AR tool for combat aviators.
After purchasing Polhemus in 2002, Rodgers transitioned the firm to private ownership, fostering a culture of innovation that solidified its global leadership. In 2024, he was honored with the NTSA Lifetime of Service Award, marking a half-century legacy of engineering excellence that paved the way for modern immersive technology.
