AWE Talks: The Path to City-Scale XR
AWE USA 2023

Welcome back to AWE Talks, our series that revisits the best of AWE’s conference sessions. The past year has seen rich insights from AWE USA, AWE Asia, and AWE Europe. And AWE USA 2024 is just around the corner.

This week, we dive into the promise of city-scale XR. What is it and how can supporting tech like 5G be a force multiplier? Immersal and Ericsson break it down for us.

See the summarized takeaways below, along with the full session video. Stay tuned for more video highlights each week and check out the full library on AWE’s YouTube Channel.

– One XR's promises is to have city-scale experiences with relevant geo-anchored content.
   – But there are several technical and practical challenges to achieving that vision.
– One of the many enablers and tech-stack components is low-latency connectivity.
   – 5G can support this due to both speed and location precision (high-frequency signal).
– There's also a natural evolution of use cases so consumers can crawl before they walk.
   – For example, video is one of the top projected early use cases for headworn XR.
   – And that's already playing out, given the positioning around XReal Air 2 and Vision Pro.
   – Before demand grows for XR-native experiences, consumers want what they know
   – Video is also a good place for XR to find a foothold, as it can inflect the medium itself.
   – According to Sethi, video has hit a ceiling in terms of consumption in other form factors.
   – XR headsets could therefore cause the next inflection in video engagement.
– From there, consumers will get acclimated to XR and grow into many native use cases.
– And that's when new network requirements are really going to be needed.
– City-scale XR, geospatial AR and other advanced and native experiences will follow.
   – Innovators like Immersal will power that vision while 5G enablers like Ericsson accelerate it.
