Description

Knowledge graphs are typically represented as nodes and arcs. A knowledgebase of more than minimal size, however, rapidly leads to the classic hairball problem onscreen. XR is technology that enables drawing a knowledge graph in actual 3-D, and the Venturi science is the needed paradigm shift to interact with a complex display.

The basis of Venturi is that the human comes first. In contrast to conventional approaches, which is that there are APIs to technologies and the human maps itself to those APIs, in Venturi there is an API to the human cognitive system, and technologies must interface to that human centered API. In this way, there is not really any user training, as humans learn how to interface to reality from the day they're born. Overall, Venturi is a confluence of IT, KM (semantic web, graph databases, etc.), 3D computer graphics, XR, and built on a base of cognitive science.

The Venturi principles are being applied at the Computer Graphics History Institute to build the Cadmus knowledge base. This Institute has a twofold mission: reference and research. First, it will be be a reference site for research and education. It will serve as a research base in several areas, the first being digital knowledge models of history. Another is cognitive based interaction with technology when the interaction focus is completely centered on cognitive abilities. Another area is what kinds of interaction can be built when the basis is cognitive abilities rather than technology features. These missions are designed for mutual community benefit, in both reference and research.
